Rene: Has since fallen back asleep.

Mr. Note: I lean over her. "She seems to have gone back to sleep. Pity this had to happen. When I first met her, she was this shy, quiet girl, that hid at the back of the class hoping not to be noticed. I saw that she liked to draw clothing designs in her notebook. So when a holiday pageant came around, I recommending that she design and create the costumes for it. That seemed to work to bring her out of her shell. She jumped at the chance and has been happy ever since. How... why would she...? I don't understand."

I blush. "I think it's because of me and because of what I did on my first day of school. she said she was scared of me and that I might go berserk when she has a different opinion than me and she was frustrated that I would rather spend my time arguing with you than cuddling with her. but suicide? I don't understand it either. did I really harm her that badly?"

(I'd like to let them find out that it was all a misunderstanding. though then Rene would probably get angry at Mr. Note again. after all it is his fault. the word detention has a definition, when he uses it in another way, the misunderstanding is his fault and therefore all of this is his fault and he nearly killed Rene because he couldn't talk properly. that's what Rene would think.)

I didn't know she was this fragile. If we're to continue discussing what happened between you and me, I'd prefer not to do it here. It's not the place. She's upset enough, I don't want her upset further. Do you understand?"

"yes, I don't want to upset her either. but I'd rather keep sitting here and watch her. when she wakes up again, I'd like someone to be there for her. the nurses are all busy. they can't sit here all day and wait for her to wake up. and I don't want her to be lonely."

"you may" I gently stroke Rene's cheek. I open the book and read it out once again. I stop after a while "Mr. Note, could you do us a favour? could you bring us another book? I don't want to bore her with reading the same book a third time in a row"

somehow I manage to make even this book sound interesting while I read it out. it doesn't really sound like just a biography, it sounds alive.

I stroke her hair and hum a lullaby for her. while we are alone I reach a point where I can't hold my tears any more. I bury my face in her shoulder and cry.
